What are the qualifications to become a member of USDFA?
All US Doctors For Africa program member applicants must meet the following requirements:
All candidates must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
All candidates must hold current medical licenses issued by the local, state, and federal agencies.
All candidates must provide one copy of their medical degree and current medical licenses.
Upon approval of your membership, two passport photos are also required.
Additional references are always helpful - you may submit letters of recommendation with your application.

How long does the membership process take?
Once we receive your completed application and required documentation, we will contact you as soon as possible. Most communication is done via-e-mail; but, we are also available via phone (818-728-6629) Monday through Friday 9AM-5PM PST/PDT to answer any questions.
What is the time commitment required of USDFA volunteers?
Four weeks (excluding travel time) per mission is the minimum time commitment needed from USDFA members.
Who covers the expenses of the missions?
US Doctors For Africa covers all basic travel expenses for our volunteer medical professionals. We provide all mission related costs including airfare, hotel, food, visa, travelers-insurance, ground-transportation, vaccinations and translation (if necessary).
Who coordinates mission logistics?
Our staff handles all administrative work related to the volunteer missions including coordinating all travel, accommodations, visas and insurance.
What types of tasks are asked of volunteer medical professionals?
Direct care and treatment to those affected by the HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases.
Provide training to the local doctors and other medical professionals.
Help strengthen the infrastructure of the hospital or clinic where you are stationed.
Help create prevention and education programs for long-term self-sustainability and capacity building programs.
Upon completion of your volunteer mission, you will be asked to provide your assessment of the current situation and any recommendations to improve the general health care circumstances.
What are the benefits of becoming a USDFA program member?
Well-organized and well-managed missions that streamline the process of looking for volunteer opportunities in Africa.
USDFA members receive monthly e-mails highlighting volunteer opportunities in Africa - broken down by country. Each opportunity includes a synopsis of the project, assessment of needs, background information on any partner NGOs, minimum time commitment and any other relevant information about the project.
All logistics to get you to and from Africa are handled by our office staff.
As a USDFA member, there is a possibility that you may be invited to give expert testimony before US Members of Congress regarding your experience volunteering in African and health care issues.
USDFA members have the opportunity to participate in our yearly USDFA conference which addresses current health care issues affecting Africa
USDFA members have the opportunity to work with the local African Ministry in developing health care modules to strengthen the existing local health care infrastructure.
Finally, all USDFA members receive a certificate of recognition from US Doctors For Africa for their commitment to increasing accessibility to health care services for people throughout Africa.
